Cont. Ed. : Postbasic
Gerontology Program for Licensed Practical Nurses
This program is designed to enable
licensed practical nurses to acquire the necessary knowledge and practice
expertise to care for older persons in all health and health care settings. Program
Theory Component
Three examinations are written during completion of the modules. The pass mark for theory is 70%. Invigilators are available to facilitate writing of examinations for learners living outside the St. John's area, if necessary.Modules
The five modules include specific content relevant to caring for and understanding the older person.Module One - Overview of Gerontologic Nursing
Module Two - Health Promotion: An Influence on Health Determinants
Module Three - Mental Health, Neurologic and Cognitive functions
Module Four - Coping with Acute and Chronic conditions
Module Five - The Aging Body Systems
Clinical Experience
Upon successful completion of the theoretical component of the program, learners will complete a clinical component. Learners will be accommodated in their own geographic region as much as possible.For the clinical component of this course there are 2 possible options:
Entrance Requirements
Currently registered and in good standing with the Council for Licensed Practical Nurses of Newfoundland and LabradorProgram Fees
Program Offering
Learners can enroll on a continuous intake basis anytime during the year.Program Completion
The Centre for Nursing Studies offers Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) as a service to learners who feel they may have achieved learning through previous knowledge and experience.
Learners can complete the program at their own pace but must complete the program within one year.
